Install VMware Tools on RHEL/CentOS

imagesSince I seem to always have a mental cramp when it comes to this I figured that I would write about it so that it may not only help others, but myself as well.

I have several instances where I need to install VMware Tools on linux hosts. At work we are a Red Hat shop, but at home I go the CentOS route, since I do not have deep pockets. The procedure is really quite simple as long as you have a current network connection. To install you merely perform the following series of events.

  1. Click VM in the virtual machine menu, then click Guest > Install/Upgrade VMware Tools and click OK.
  2. SSH into VM
  3. Copy and Paste the following commands into the SSH session

yum -y install perl
mkdir /mnt/cdrom
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
tar -zxf /mnt/cdrom/VMwareTools-*.tar.gz -C /tmp
umount /mnt/cdrom
cd /
./tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/ –default
rm -f /tmp/VMwareTools-*.tar.gz
rm -rf /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib

Thats it. You have now installed VMware Tools on your Linux Host.
